Drive on the left of the road

Whilst priority is given to vehicles coming from the right, cars are driven on left side of the road.

Speed limitation

On the main open roads 80 km/hr, whilst in the inside roads and villages, there is a speed limit of 40 km/hr. We can drive at an average speed of 100km/hr on the highway. One should take notice of the speed signs as there are cameras and radars

For safe driving

Seats belts must be worn at all times when travelling (including rear seats belts)

As in other countries drink and drive is not compatible. There are several post checks by the police authority and you are not allowed to have more than 50mg of alcohol in the bloodstream

Using a mobile phone while driving is illegal and is liable to fine

Heavy Traffic

Hours of heavy traffic : 07:30am – 09:30am, and 15:00pm – 18:00pm. It is advisable to avoid the Port Louis area and the entrance and exits of the main cities.

Fuel / Petrol

All petrol stations provide diesel and unleaded fuel. Opening hours for petrol stations are from 6.00 am to 8.00 pm (Monday to Sunday)

Parking

In places where there is no free parking like in Port Louis, Rose Hill, Curepipe and Quatre Bornes, you will need parking tickets which are on sale in almost all petrol stations. There are two types of parking tickets, one blue (zone 1- 20 Rupees) and one green (zone 2- 10 Rupees). There is indication in the parking site of the type of ticket required.
